Summer Camping Tips (and a Little Help from Your Friends at Old Ocean FCU)

There’s just something about summer that calls us outside. Whether it’s the smell of burgers on the grill, the sound of cicadas in the trees, or the pull of wide-open roads, summer was made for exploring—and we’ve got camping fever!

So, if you’re dreaming of campfires, starry skies, and the sweet sound of nothing but nature, we’ve got a few camping tips to help you get the most out of your summer adventures. (And hey—if you need a little help getting into that dream camper or RV, we know some folks who can help… wink wink.)

1. Start with a Plan—but Stay Flexible

Whether you’re tent camping, hauling a camper, or living that full-on RV life, it helps to plan ahead. Book campsites early (especially on weekends), check the weather, and make a checklist so you don’t forget essentials like bug spray, matches, and your favorite snacks. But remember—part of the magic of camping is going with the flow. Rainstorms? No problem. Detours? Could lead to the best views. Embrace the unexpected!

2. Don’t Skimp on the Food

Hot dogs and s’mores are classics for a reason, but camping cuisine has come a long way. Pre-make foil packets with veggies and meat, bring along a cast iron skillet for epic campfire breakfasts, or treat yourself to a campfire pizza. (Yes, it’s a thing. Yes, it’s delicious.) Pro tip: freeze a few water bottles to keep your cooler cold longer—and have icy cold drinks once they thaw.

3. Safety First, Adventure Second

Camping is all fun and games… until someone forgets the first-aid kit. Make sure you’ve got the basics covered—band-aids, antiseptic, sunscreen, and allergy meds. If you’re hiking, let someone know your route. If you’re near water, wear a life vest. And if you’re anywhere in Texas? Respect the fire bans and be smart about your campfires.

4. Leave It Better Than You Found It

Pack it in, pack it out. Whether you’re at a developed campsite or boondocking in the middle of nowhere, always leave nature cleaner than you found it. Bring garbage bags, avoid single-use plastics, and teach the kids about respecting wildlife and the great outdoors. (Nature’s not a trash can, y’all!)

5. Go Big or Go… With a Loan 😉
